5th grade celebrates Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Folk Art!
6th graders would choose to paint illustrations of Mexican-inspired BIRDHOUSES, or Our Lady Guadalupe. We studied examples of Folk Art and noticed how it's often whimsical with a lot of repeated pattern. The art often includes birds, flowers and bright colors and uses common, found materials.
Wayne Thiebaud Cupcakes...
6th graders learned about my personal favorite painter, Wayne Thiebaud. He's considered a POP artist to many because of his whimsical, everyday objects he paints. Much of his art is of cupcakes and pies. The kids learned about the "painterly" style of painting which is loose and shows many of the brushstrokes and thickness of the paint.
The 6th graders learned about print making. They carved their own plates and from them made prints themselves for Christmas cards. Thank you to ART DOCENT Mrs. Doud for this awesome project!
6th graders learned about artist Paul Klee and then created their own colorful fish art inspired by his painting "Golden Fish". The kids started off "drawing" their fish in glue on black paper. After it dried they colored them in with oil pastel - keeping in mind to select high contrast colors like those in Klee's bright paintings. -Nov. 2012
