2nd graders talk about the Creation.
Prayer service was about the Creation so the 2nd graders painted creatures to decorate the stage. If I have my way, these fabulous, large paintings will stay in the basement hall forever at IC-OLPH. So cute!!
2nd grade Monoprint Sailboats.
Mrs. Burn's class practiced making monoprints by painting the water, then the sky, then a contrasting sailboat in warm colors. They folded the art in half which printed the sailboat's reflection on the water. They learned MONOPRINTS are one, single print, each one different and you never know what you're going to get.
2nd grade collage birds.
Mrs. Burns' class learned about nature artist John James Audobon and his contributions to the study and understanding of birds. They created their own wacky tissue paper and collage birds on recycled cardboard.
Study in Warm vs Cool colors.
2nd graders painted their own papers to use for this project: One in warm colors, one is cool. The next class they cut a heart out of one of the papers and mounted it on the large one. I love the cool, graphic Valentine's art they ended up with.
RRRobots in the Art Room!
We definitely try to be Earth Friendly in the art room and Reduce, Reuse & Recycle whenever possible. 2nd graders reused some sheet music for the background of these fun watercolor robots.
2nd graders make Paul Klee faces...
We learned about Swiss Painter Paul Klee ("clay") and his abstract work. The 2nd graders used his "Senecio" painting for inspiration in these faces in oil pastel. To finished them and make them more Klee-like, kids painted red over their entire painting and then scraped most of it off. Very cool abstract work!
Singing Angels!
I love these singing angels the 2nd graders did before Christmas break.
2nd grade poinsettias --
Mrs. Burns' kids painted these beautiful poinsettias that helped decorate the stage for the Christmas program. The kids learned to be aware of subtle differences in one color in order to work with two reds that contrasted slightly for the petals. This way they would understand what happens when you add a warm orange or yellow, a cool blue or a white to red paint.
2nd graders learned about Art Master Paul Cezanne and how he loved to paint apples. These beautiful still life paintings were done first, using oil pastel to color their fruit sketches. Then, the kids used baby oil on q-tips to blend the colors. Lastly, they practiced the "wet on wet" watercolor technique for the background and table. Amazing! —Nov. 2012
2nd graders started out the year discussing the color wheel and COOL vs WARM colors. We experimented with cool and warm with these wonderful cool rockets lifting off with their warm orange exhaust. Another day they mixed colors to make their own color wheel with primary and secondary colors.
We discussed abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky and after talking about his color study titled "Squares and Concentric Circles" we created our own concentric circles flowers in paper collage.
The second graders were still reeling from the excitement of Sausage Fest so I thought what a great time to have some open-ended, no-rules creating time with black paint. We discussed Kandinsky again - but not for his Concentric Circles art but his abstract, bold black paint strokes in some of his art. Kids were asked to create any active scene from their weekend...as you can tell, many were inspired by the carnival.
Mrs. Burns' class learned about Henri Matisse and how he worked with bright, cheerful colors and paper collage later in his life. We were inspired by the art The Garden to create these fun paper collage pieces. Take a look at Annabelle's amazing use of positive and negative space!
