Mexican Folk Art "Bark" Painting...
Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!
We celebrated the birthday of the great author/illustrator Theodor Geisel in the art room. I love, LOVE this project because, even though we all walked through the same steps to mimic the illustration style of Seuss, they all have such different and unique expressions. They crack me up.
St. Patrick's Day "Jar o'Luck" Collage...
3rd graders practice their LINE DRAWING skills with their SHOES!
We warmed up by learning about CONTOUR LINE DRAWING where the kids looked at a mug and drew (sometimes even blindly) only the lines that depict edges or shadows. It's really hard to let go of what we think a mug looks like and draw only the edges and lines that we are truly observing...including the cast shadows. But these 3rd graders, again, totally surprised and impressed me - they nailed it. Then they went on to create these fun illustrations of their own shoe.
These amazing 3rd graders..."SONrise" art in time for Easter.
With every project in the art room we discuss which ELEMENTS or PRINCIPLES of DESIGN the artist is focusing on. My hope is to give ICOLPH kids the vocabulary to discuss art and verbalize which parts of a piece they do and do not like. 3rd graders ABSOLUTELY amaze me, every time, in their understanding of these terms. With these cross paintings they utilized VALUE (in the sun), COLOR (warm and cool), SPACE (negative space of the cross and the cast shadow showing space), TEXTURE (brush strokes in the sky and grass)... and can tell you all about it! THEY ROCK!!!
Amazing Collage inspired by Matisse's Goldfish painting...
The 3rd graders put a lot of art class time and energy into these beautiful, bright GOLDFISH collages. They focused on the ELEMENTS of DESIGN: color, pattern, line and form. They first had to paint their background considering the contrasts in warm vs cool colors and the textures created through a variety of pattern. They learned about form as they sketched their bowl and table giving it 3D. They lastly created their goldfish in paper collage.BEAUTIFUL!!
Jim Dine inspired hearts...
After discussing artist Jim Dine the 3rd graders created these fun collages out of paint and mixed papers.
3rd graders discussed artist John James Audobon -
After a discussion on wildlife realist artist John James Audobon, Mrs. Vigil's class created these bright birds in pastel.
How are you going to get your Christmas tree home?
Mrs. Vigil's class studies the Solar System...
Modigliani-Inspired Self Portraits--
Boy, I love to do art with this class! 3rd graders just dive in to any project and/or medium I bring to them. Their finished pieces are so creative and expressive - all so different from the rest! We talked about the Italian-born Expressionist artist Armedeo Modigliani and his elongated portraits and sculptures. These are their own portraits in oil pastel. Awesome!
Mrs. Vigil's class learns about PERSPECTIVE...
We talked about one of the Elements of Design: SPACE. A way to show space is to put perspective into your art. The 3rd graders did this in their sunflower paintings by making - 1. Objects in the front bigger, with more details and brighter colors than those objects further away. And by 2.- understanding that warmer colors seem to come forward while cool colors seem to move away.
