Mrs. White's class studies the art of Hundertwasser.
The Austrian artist know for his organic shapes in both his painting and in is architectural design - particularly the spiral. He was an environmentalist as well.
We celebrated the new YEAR of the SNAKE in the art room with these cool oil pastel illustrations. The kids chose to draw either a SNAKE or (last year's) YEAR of the DRAGON. They completed the art outlining the design in black and printing their own "chop" in red. Not shown is Maddie's Dragon that won honorable mention at the Archbishop Murphy Art Show and will go up in a student show exhibit at The SEATTLE ART MUSEUM!! Congrats, Maddie!!!!
I'm dreaming of...
Mrs. White's class painted these fun creations illustrating what they are dreaming of for Christmas.
4th graders learn about positive vs negative space in art...
4th graders did an art project that considers Positive and Negative space. We talked about the Japanese term for Light and Dark in art - "Notan". They cut shapes out of a paper square and then had to reflect them to the outside of the square. It wasn't always easy to keep track of all the pieces. I was lucky to get a photo of just one of the final masterpieces before they went home.

Mrs. White's Lizards!
By special request from a student, 4th graders created oil pastel lizards. We talked about artist Paul Klee and his painting "Golden Fish" and considered his use of super bright colors against a black background to make our bright lizards POP. -Oct '12
Mrs. White's class began the year with a LINE study by creating abstract art from their name and filling in spaces in between with a variety of lines and patterns. The goal was to have patterns that were visually contrasting - some with lighter values of black and some darker. -Sept. '12
In October, the 4th graders studied Impressionist painter Georges Seurat and tried out his POINTILLISM technique with their own pumpkin art. They used only yellow and red paint to mix the perfect shades of orange and worked to clearly show where the light source was and which area of the pumpkin was in shadow. -Oct. 2012
4th graders learned about Henri Matisse and his cut paper collage. We created these paint and paper collages inspired by the Matisse work-"Beasts of the Sea."
