1st grade Starry Nights...
Mrs. Weatherbie's class did an awesome job learning about BACKGROUND, MIDGROUND and FOREGROUND while studying Vincent VanGogh and his Starry Night painting.
Eric Carle inspired Spring Collage...
The 1st graders spent an art class time hand painting lots of paper that we later cut up for these awesome collages. They used so many cool objects to create all this texture...tire tracks, legos, stamps, sponges, toothbrushes, forks, etc. The kids weren't allowed to use any pens in their collage so they did a great job creating all the tiny details in cut paper. So cute...
Recycled BUGS!
Fun to think of all the ways you can use plastic. 1st graders painted bugs and gave them wings with decorated plastics.
Circle painting!
The kids worked with long sheets of butcher paper on long tables. They had one color and painted circles where they were standing. After a few minutes, we all had to move to the left and then add to whatever the person before us painted. The kids were sooooo cute checking in with the artist before them to ask if it was ok for them to elaborate on the circle that one started.
Easter Chicks...
1st graders practiced printing (with cotton balls) yellow chicks. We discussed stamping an orange beak that would show which way the chick was looking.
Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss!
1st graders created ONE FISH, TWO FISh - RED FISH, BLUE FISH.
If these don't make you smile, I don't know what will!
Inspired by Picasso's The Flowers of Peace art, Mrs. Weatherbie's class made these out of cut paper collage.
Happy Chinese New Year!
In art we discussed the new YEAR of the SNAKE...and then made these fun snakes in oil pastel and had them weaving through the tall grass.
1st grade printmaking.
We learned a little bit about the art of printmaking and then the kids made these wonderful line drawings in foam, carved them with a wooden stick and printed. SO COOL!!!
Free creating...!!
It's important to have free time in the art room with endless supplies to create as the kids would like! While wrapping up our printmaking projects kids made these amazing art pieces while they waited.
Monet-inspired Impressionist Waterlily Watercolors
Mrs. Weatherbie's class created these lovely Waterlilies by using oil pastel resist. (Oil pastel flowers resists the watercolor painted over the top.)
1st grade LINE experiments...
We talked about LINE being an Element of Design (or one of the ways artists can make their art different from others) and looked at many examples with fine artist's work. The kids created interesting lines coming from the edge of a paper and then selected the most interesting area to color in. Lastly, they framed that area.
Christmas Tree Paper Collage!
Painted Christmas Lights!
(I apologize about the horizontal photos!! There was a bit of a learning curve :)
First graders started the year discussing COOL vs WARM colors.
We practiced this by painting cool blue rockets and hot orange exhaust backgrounds. -Sept. 2012

We learned about the abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky. We studied his painting "Squares and Concentric Circles" which was the inspiration for these paper collage trees with Kandinsky-like circles for the leaves and traced hands for the trunk. -Oct. 2012
I think it's important for kids to have time to create and get messy without any guided project. That's what we did today! We discussed the master artist Henri Matisse and how he turned to paper collage art later in his life. 1st graders had tons of mixed materials and created their own abstract art. I hope kids take the time to do this at home since many were creating five or six different pieces of art and didn't want to stop.
The 1st graders had so much fun making hand prints for their adorable self portraits that I thought they needed to do more. We read a book about pop artist Andy Warhol and created their own Warhol-inspired art.
