Art Elective class illustrates the Elements of Design
We often discuss the Elements of Design in the art room. Beginning in Kindergarten we learn about the Elements: Line, Color, Texture, Form, Space, Value...and the closely related Principles of Design: Emphasis, Contrast, Pattern, Harmony, etc. The art elective kids were assigned the project of illustrating 6 of these elements or principles, supporting their choices with a written statement and cd covers. The kids did an amazing job! A few are posted here - with others to be posted soon.
Art Elective's POP art -
The 7th and 8th graders talked about the POP movement of the 60's and the artists Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jim Dine and Wayne Theibaud. We learned how Pop artists like these took everyday objects and made them interesting. The kids' task was to choose a candy wrapper or iconic label, crop them tightly giving attention to the positive and negative areas to create an interesting composition. They then painted them accurately with bright colors and a strong attention to detail and craftsmanship. Assembled all together in the hall looks extremely cool.
Value studies and silhouettes -
The Art Elective kids did their own Value Scale in their sketchbooks but after seeing the 4th graders cool Value Branches they wanted to do one too. Fortunately, they all took the project a bit further and chose unique subjects for their silhouette. --Very cool!
Pastel Snowmen at night...
Art elective students practiced their form highlighting and cast shadows with these fun snowmen in pastel.
Art Elective Color Wheel Studies...
Art Elective kids had the job of mixing 12 colors (the secondary and tertiary colors) out of the 3 PRIMARY colors: Red, Yellow and Blue. They then had to organize the colors into a unique shape and design. They could choose to lay the colors out in a simple wheel but were encouraged to incorporate them into a creative graphic or illustrative concept. In this great class most everyone opted to take the project further to create their own extremely cool design.
